Marine Aquarium Filters

Aquariums are really artificial homes for our fish, these confined spaces without freely running water and proportionaly an extremely high number of fish per litre of water require the support of technology to maintain conditions in which fish can survive and flourish. All fish produce a range of waste products which, if they are allowed to accumulate within the aquarium, will lead to a decline in water quality and fish health. Whilst stringent feeding practices and regular water changes may help, most aquarists will rely upon some form of filter to remove and break down these potentially toxic waste products. There are many different types of filters to keep your aquarium clean and healthy.

We stock a wide range of aquarium filters for both the Marine and Freshwater environments.

Biostar

Biorotor filter for fresh and salt water aquariums up to 250 litres (c. 65 gallons)

The Biostar is a complete biological and mechanical filter system for aquariums up to 250 litres (c. 65 gallons) and is easily mounted as a hang on filter (4 cm, c. 1.6” capacity) outside the aquarium. Its principal component is the Biorotor, a rotating sponge wheel. This wheel is only partly immersed and as a result, the bacteria living on the sponge are alternately submersed and then emersed. This encourages a high oxygen uptake and the filter becomes a powerful reducer of biological waste – volume to volume far more efficient than conventional trickle filters.

The Biostar is equipped with a pre filter sponge for mechanical filtration and a circulation pump with a capacity of 1000 l/hr (c. 250 gph)

Dimensions (l x w x h): 8 x 25 x 23 cm (c. 3.2”x 10” x 9.2”)
art.no.: 500.20

In fishkeeping, a refugium is an appendage to a marine, brackish, or freshwater fish tank that shares the same water supply. For some applications water flow is limited in order to protect plants or animals that need very slow water. The refugium light cycle can be operated opposite to the main tank, in order to keep the total system pH more stable (due to the uptake of acid-forming CO2 by the refugium during its daylight hours). One size guideline is 1/10th main tank volume.

A refugium may be used for one or more purposes such as denitrification, nutrient export, plankton production, circulation, surface agitation, oxygenation or aesthetic purposes.

Crossroads can custom build a refugium to suit your requirements and they can help you buiild you own. Call us or visit us to find out what refugium would best suit your needs.
