Water pumps are used for varies jobs in reef aquariums. Larger pumps are used to run sump, trickle or refugium filters. Depending on what type of filter you are using to what water turn over will be required from the pump. With trickle and sump filters a higher volume of water turn over is required.When using refugium filters a slower turn over of water is needed. Another point is the head height required from your pump to return water from your filter back into the aquarium. Remember pumps are not built for lift of water so you may need to use a larger pump to get enough flow from the pump.

Smaller sized pumps are mainly used for circulation inside your aquarium. In marine tanks especially reef aquariums movement of water is vital. Many circulation pumps are placed inside your aquarium to stop dead spots of water. They are often placed on the bottom of the aquarium to stop deadbre from sitting under your live rocks. Having water movement on your surface helps with oxygenation of the aquarium as we do not use air stones for airation in marine aquariums.
